A very interesting article, rather interview, with Charles Handy (via Scoble).

In particular, as a parent of a toddler and someone who has recently started thinking A LOT about pre-school and education in general, I found this statement very interesting:
I think that one trend that's coming is that every child should understand at an early age his or her intelligence profile. This follows psychologist Howard Gardner's idea that there are several different kinds of intelligences -- analytical, interpersonal, practical, physical, musical, and so on. People simply have different aptitudes. Once we have identified those, we can design an individual curriculum which, for at least half of the school time, concentrates on developing those particular intelligences, irrespective of the core base of the teaching.
I couldn't agree more!  I was a 4.0 student through school, but not because I was extremely interested in all or even most of the subjects.  Quite frankly, I was just really good at using what I call "subject matter common sense" while taking tests.  Most of the time I could easily rule out most of the options (for multiple choice) or subject matter (for essay) based on the question's context and then apply my basic knowledge of the subject in a logical manner.

Anyway, I graduated from college with a BS in Accounting, but not because of a real passion for the subject.  I selected accounting because I seemed to have an affinity for math and it seemed like a good way to make a decent living.  I found out after being in public accounting for a few years that I hated it!  Perhaps if I had been able to pursue more 'personal interests' in school I might have leaned in a different direction...like computers! ;-) That would have given me a 10 year start on my current career!

In all fairness, I must give my Mom some credit here. A few times during my teenage years she paid to have me go through 'profiling' interviews/exams in which they tried to pinpoint the things that Charles talks about in the excerpt above...my areas of intelligences. They definitely pointed out that I am very analytical and it was beneficial for me to know that during certain times of my life.

Anyway, it's a very interesting article. Check it out!

I've held off on discussing Live.com since it's big announcement a few weeks ago primarily because I hadn't used start.com much other than a cursory look when I first heard about it.  Just to be clear, I'm specifically referring to the site Live.com NOT the whole initiative of Live Services.

If you're curious about the Live Services then check out the PressPass announcement or the Microsoft Monitor's posts: What Live Is and What Live Is Not.

Now, on to my impression of Live.com.  2 words...it rocks!  =)

I've made it my homepage and am really digging the customizability. I'm not sure if that's even really a word, but the concept completely describes the Live.com experience.  It's my homepage that I design how I want. I add exactly the content I want. I add the Gadgets that I want. I add the news I want.  I add the weather I want. I add the stock quotes I want.  You get the picture. ;-) Everything about it is exactly what I want...the way I want it!

So what do I have on my Live.com page right now?  Here's the current list of Gadgets I'm using...
Check out MicrosoftGadgets for lots of other ones you can use!  There are 82 as of right now and several new ones being added all of the time.

One word of caution...if you prefer pre-configured, pre-packaged content like MSN.com then Live.com is probably not for you.  Live.com is like starting from a blank slate which isn't for everyone.  In fact, it's not supposed to be for everyone.  In my mind, I view MSN and Live as the sort of yin and yang of our web offerings.  They will peacefully coexist and actually complement each other with their differences. ;-)

The Xbox 360 released today!  If you aren't familiar with the hardware or the release then you're not a gamer. ;-)

I'm reading reports of sold out stores and short-sighted shipments.  I haven't spoken much about the system, it's specs or the games because I'm not planning on buying one right away.  I still have a back-log of 20+ Xbox games to play on my original Xbox.  So I figure that I've got at least another 6 months worth of good gaming in front of me before I'll need a 360. ;-)

Either way, the console looks awesome and I do plan on buying one eventually...just not right now.

You scored as Indiana Jones. Indiana Jones is an archaeologist/adventurer with an unquenchable love for danger and excitement. He travels the globe in search of historical relics. He loves travel, excitement, and a good archaeological discovery. He hates Nazis and snakes, perhaps to the same degree. He always brings along his trusty whip and fedora. He's tough, cool, and dedicated. He relies on both brains and brawn to get him out of trouble and into it.

I haven't posted in awhile for a few reasons...randomized at work, starting a new project, trying to finish up another project, learning inherited code and just plain lazy. :-P

So I'm going to get back into it with a light-hearted post.  Could you pass 8th grade math?

As a matter of fact, I could! ;-)

***You Passed 8th Grade Math***

Congratulations, you got 10/10 correct!

I threw this under the Grumblings category for two reasons.. because I'm sick and tired of the stupid Trackback spammers and I'm irritated that the Spaces UI doesn't allow me an easy way of deleting multiple items. Argghh!  I was deleting them individually as they came in packs of 3-5, but finally had more than I wanted to deal with.  So I used Scott's tool, Spaces Cleanup.

I realize I'm late to this particular party, but if you're spending a lot of time dealing with Trackback spammers you should definitely use this tool!

Spaces Cleanup Tool

I often find myself cleaning up comment or trackback spam. These are comments or trackback that are either out of scope or are attempting to drive traffic to a specific site. Currently, it is very tedious to delete multiple items. I created the Spaces Cleanup tool to help.

Before I explain the tool, I want to be clear that this tool is not endorsed or supported. I have tested this tool against my own space. Feel free to use this tool at your own risk. It is very likely this tool will be broken at some point by an update to Spaces (it is designed so I can update it if necessary), and I expect, like the original Edit It tool, will become unecessary in the future.

What is the Spaces Cleanup Tool?

It is a button you can add to your Internet Explorer toolbar (via your favorites). When you are editing your space (either the "Home" Page or "Blog" Page, select this tool from favorites menu to convert all the individual delete options to checkboxes. You can quickly check multiple items and delete them. On the "Blog" edit page, if you expand any items, you can click the Spaces Cleanup button again to reconvert any new delete buttons.

When you are finished selecting items for deletion, click the "Permanently Delete Checked Items" button added to your web-page (immediately below the Home, Profile, etc., tabs). Once confirmed, sit back, and the selected items will be deleted. Once all the items are deleted, the page will reload.

How do I Install the Spaces Cleanup Tool?

Visit the Spaces Cleanup Tool page and follow the instructions.

I was on vacation for several days the past few weeks and then was slammed at work...so that's the reason for the lack of posts.  Here are a few things that have happened since my last post...
  • My mom flew up from San Antonio, TX to visit us and her only grandchild for 10 days.
  • Took a 2 day vacation in Leavenworth, WA while Grandmama babysat.
  • I took several days of vacation.
  • I actually got to play my Xbox.
  • My daughter continues to learn and grow at a rate that just amazes me!
  • I won 2nd place in the costume contest at (my bosses) Halloween party.
  • Things promptly blew up upon returning to work.
  • While investigating one problem I accidentally created an even bigger one that had us chasing our own tails for a whole day (that one could be a whole post by itself).
  • I've learned A LOT more about some code that I inherited (because of the problem I created as mentioned in the previous bullet point).
  • We're getting snow in the mountains! Stevens Pass, Mount Baker and Snoqualmie are looking good for boarding/ski season. :)
