The people.

A pretty broad statement, but it couldn't be more true. I think part 4 will probably evolve into at least a 4.1 and maybe a 4.2 in the future because this topic is so broad. For 4.0 I'll focus on the Microsoft bloggers I have been in touch with, in fact you've probably heard of a few of them...

So why have these people (and others like them) made me enjoy working at Microsoft? Because they have all been extremely nice and exceptionally helpful when I called on them for assistance, advice or information. I contacted most of these people through their blog (I think Dan is the only exception) with questions specific to their expertise. Each and every one of them was very responsive and helpful. I won't go into any more specifics than above, but suffice it to say that I'm happy/proud to know that I work at the same company as people of this caliber.

In my previous post, The Get a Mac ad campaign, I direct you to the comical new Apple ads. And now I bring you the responses from a few web comics I read regularly, PvPonline and Ctrl+Alt+Del. These two comics focus on the video game environment/industry, but they also have their opinions about computers [and damn near everything else] that slip in every now and then. ;-)

Good stuff.

That’s right; all the cool kids are doing it now. Omar Shahine, Dare Obasanjo and of course Word guru Joe Friend have already posted directly from Word 2007 so I thought I’d jump on the bandwagon. See Joe’s post for more details.

This is one of the very cool things about working at Microsoft, I get to try a lot of the cool new applications long before they ever hit the street (Windows Vista, Live Mail, Office 2007, Live Messenger, OneCare, etc. ). Internally this is called ‘dogfooding’ and is highly encouraged so that the product groups can get the best version released to you, the public.

Update: Similar to Omar, I had to use Fiddler to intercept the HTTP session and remove “.iso8601” from the date element in the post in order to get it to work with dasBlog. A PITA to be certain, but I have filed a bug with the Office group so that it will hopefully be resolved.

You might have heard that Paris Hilton [no relation thank god...except for missing out on the huge inheritance part] made an appearance at E3 this year to promote some Bejeweled knock-off for mobile phones. That's not the cool part though, it's how Lum the Mad confronts her bodyguards [Jedi style] when they decide to shut down one of the entrances. Priceless!

Well, it's that time of year again for us gamers. E3, or Electronic Entertainment Expo as it is officially known, brings together the big names in video game consoles (Microsoft, Sony & Nintendo) and game makers (UbiSoft, Bethesda, EA, Blizzard, etc.) for previews and boasting of all the cool things coming out over the next 12 months. Personally, as a gamer (not a Microsoft employee) I think that the Microsoft press event was the best with the most to look forward too. Nintendo had some pretty cool stuff, but I'm still not sure about that controller for the Wii. And $500 for a PS3...no thanks!

To celebrate, I thought I'd bring back a viral video from a few months ago...the Australian comedy group Tripod performing "Make You Happy Tonight." Enjoy...

Have you seen the new Apple ads for their "Get a Mac" campaign?

Personally, I like the way the ads are delivered. Simple, easy to understand and funny. Not too mention Apple definitely knows how to play the stereotypes.

...but [and you knew it was coming] I don't care for the us-versus-them style and blatant negativity towards PCs (a.k.a.: Microsoft). Similar to the satellite-versus-cable TV ad campaigns that have been going on for a few years now. I remember the first time I saw the [insert satellite tv company here] ad where the two young children are laying on the floor playing with plastic animals. The little girl turns to the other child and says "daddy says that cable is like a snake in the grass." I immediately thought that it was a low-down, politician's way of advertising...mud-slinging. That completely turned me off to the product (not my only reason, but one of them). How about extolling your virtues to me? Tell me what makes your thing-a-ma-jig so good. Tell me why so many people love your gadget. Show me how people love using your what-cha-ma-callit. Make me feel good about your product...without being a hater.

Yes, I think the ads are funny, but I think that Apple has had many other successful advertising campaigns that didn't stoop to mud-slinging...so why do it now?

It looks like the browser wars are back, at least according to Jamie at Channel 9. ;-) Of course, it helps if you know the players: Mini Skywalker, Han Scoble and Princess LisaB.

Come on in and take a load off. You have reached dirtyDogStink where everyone is welcome...software developers, microsofties, dog-lovers, technology 'enthusiasts' and everyone else. I'm an equal opportunity blogger. :-)

I have been blogging at Live Spaces, specifically justAnotherSDE, for the past year and a half. As I say in my most recent post, Live Spaces is a great service, but I wanted a few different things out of my site/blog. Long story short...here's dirtyDogStink! ;-)

For completeness and consistencies' sake, you will find all of my previous posts from justAnotherSDE right here at dirtyDogStink, minus the comments. If you're curious about the name 'dirtyDogStink' then check out where it came from on the About page.

Thanks for stopping by the new digs! More to come soon...
